The Eight Values of Free Expression that are from the First Amendment shows the Marketplace of Ideas, Participation in Self-Government, Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment, Checking Government Power, Promoting Tolerance, Promoting Innovation and Protecting Dissent. While I found the significance of each and every one of these values only three were the ones that resonated with me more which were: Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment and Promoting Innovation
Stable Change: Stable change was the first one that I had interest in because I had a hard time understanding the connections between free speech and reducing violence, but when I looked into it I could understand that allowing people to have a voice instead of fighting is essential. When people can use their voice there can be less violence in every protest or in anything, showing the necessity for a society that encourages free expression.
Individual Self-Fulfillment- Individual Self-Fulfillment equally is important as I believe that everyone should have the right to share what they think or feel without being judged. Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman talks about how self- actualization shows the discoverance of the strength and values supported by freedom of expression. This gives us the right to speak without feeling judged by others.
Promoting Innovation- Promoting Innovation resonates with the appreciation for creativity. This shows images of slam poetry and its where articles use their voices to draw attention for social views on the issues that go on. Slam poetry exemplifies promoting innovation against the critique against the government's actions. I usually most of the time so no9t like poetry but my passion for drawing even though I do not draw well I still love drawing and I believe that with drawing or painting people can show what they feel or think without speaking about it. For example; Banksy's painting “Love is in the Air” shows a message advocating hope in violence.
In conclusion, in a video that I watched talking about Freedom of Speech Creg talked about Freedom of Speech is vital which allows individuals to address injustices that might go unchallenged. While I still value all eight principles the main ones that caught my eye was; Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment and Promoting Innovation that resonates with my personal beliefs and experiences.
