Blog Post #5- Having Privacy

Having an "electronic tattoo" has an affect on a lot of people, and I didn't even know what it meant until I read and heard about it. My mom has always told me to "watch what I post or it will come back to you" I always thought how dramatic she was by telling me this until I found out that phones can actually listen to you and how we are all being watched. I could've never thought that my phone this little device can be recording me everywhere I went and listen to everything I say, this freaked me out and freaked my family out because we do not want our voices and things we say to the public.

Every time we call someone or make a TikTok or share or post on any platform it is being tracked. When someone post something on social media it stays there forever even if it gets deleted people can still take a picture of what the post was. Now that I know that the phone watches everything and listens to everything I say I am more crucial with things that I post on the media or say. I believe this is a crazy thing and the government should not have access to what I say or what I post.

Privacy is super important and everyone deserves to have privacy. I think the government should have access for some of our information when there is a reason too. I wish there were more necessities for protecting ourselves because there aren’t that many actions to stop the government when it comes to privacy. I think it’s necessary to take action and responsibility for our digital technology and the presence that it has. As well as posting on any platform it should always be double checked to see if it is a good post to post.

Once something is put out into the internet it is very unlikely to never be seen again because the government already has your information and people could’ve taken pictures of it already. So be careful about what you post now that these “electric tattoos” have been put in the world it is very dangerous in today’s world.

Blog Post #4 EOTO Project

For my EOTO project, I researched the history and the impact that VCR has on people, as well as focusing on who invented it and how it revolutionized home entertainment. The VCR was invented by Charles Ginsburg in the year 1956, VCR is a machine that plays tapes from movies or shows, Charles Ginsburg invented it because it was a way for people to consume television by allowing the audience to not only to watch their shows but also record them so that they could watch it later or on their own time. In the year 1900s and 2000s were the year that the VCR became really popular. VCR was a recording mechanism that allowed whoever to record what was on tv so they could watch it later or sell it for money.

It was invented in the 1950s, but it wasn't popular until the 1970s. VCRs were very expensive and only some people owned it so it was very rare to have a VCR in that time because of how expensive it was. When the prices began to drop and people were able to buy it.  The costumers that owned it were selling the tapes in the back of their car for people to buy and watch some shows. People finally were able to buy VCR  devices in a good price range so people could be able to buy it.

VCR became more available for the crowd making it common by the 1900s and the 2000s. Viewers were limited to what they air live on tv but the VCR allowed them to choose what they watch when they want to watch it. Before VCR people did not have a choice but to watch what was on the tv and there weren’t a lot of options, But when VCR was finally invented families could finally purchase movies from stores which has their favorite shows and movies.
There were two main competitors that rose up to VCR which were the VHS and the Betamax tapes, both of them were very popular. Betamax had some advantage because of its video quality and the sharpness that the video had, but VHS had lower prices, longer recordings, and the wide range of titles that were available, which meant VCR won overall by the customers purchasing both of them. Sony was very impacted by VCR costing them 40% of their business.

Overall, the invention of the VCR had a major change in how people watch films and television shows in todays society. While the VCR fell out with the introduction of DVDs in 2003 and was offering more storage capacity, advanced features and overall was a better option for people to buy, the legacy of the VCR still lives on till this day.

We would've never experienced an era of home cinema without VCR in the same way. It changed how people interact with social media by giving them control on their viewing habits. VCRs influence is still present in todays world.

Blog Post #1- Top Five Sources of News and Information

1. My family has a strong habit of turning on NBC News regularly, as it tends to be the first channel that comes up when we turn on the TV. This had become a daily routine. I’ve also found myself relying on NBC News for class projects and homework. Every morning as I head downstairs for breakfast, I can count on my dad to have NBC News playing. Whether we’re cooking in the kitchen, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting all down together, NBC News is often on in the background. The only time we skip it is during lunch since the kitchen usually gets too crowded and noisy for us to focus on the broadcast. Overall, NBC News has become part of our family life, providing us with the last east updates while creating a sense of togetherness.

2. Whenever I begin working on research papers in high school or, in college, I find myself turning to The New York Times website as my primary source of information. There’s something about the information that they write about that makes me feel confident and I sometimes always find accurate and relevant content for any topic I choose. Even when I am not actively using it for school projects, I still enjoy exploring the articles while relaxing in bed or traveling in the car. No matter what, there always seems to be something that intrigues me in The New York Times that captures my attention and keeps me informed about the world around me.

3. Growing up, Fox News was another major source of information for me, largely, because it was always on at my grandparents house. Every time I would spend the night there, I noticed that it was a common channel that my grandparents would watch. As soon as I turned on the TV, Fox News was usually the first channel that appeared. I can remember sitting on the couch, listening to the news report and discussions while my grandparents shared their thoughts about current events. It became a kind of routine for me. Watching it not only helped me understand different things about the news but it made me engage with my grandparents more. Overall, Fox News played a significant role in media and news, especially during those cozy weekends at their house.

4. As a college student ESPN is a crucial source for me not only for checking scores in sport games but also the cultural conversations that happen during sport games. I love watching the latest highlights especially in soccer and in volleyball because those were the main sports I played throughout my whole high, middle and lower school life. The platform has easy access to broadcasts that are sometimes live and I always get the chance to watch it. Every time there was a game for solver or volleyball and I am in school I sometimes so not have the chance to watch the games so I always wait till I get home and every time ESPN has it on there highlights it brightens my day. As well as ESPN has many analyses that lead to engaging with other people which can lead to making new connections with others.

5. Being in college as a freshman I sometimes like to check out the news about money and how other businesses are doing. It gives me a source of help when I want to learn about the stock market and what is going on in today’s economic society. This might be important for when I want to get a real job. CNBC has very good articles that teaches me many things, this makes it enjoyable for me to explore new topics about finance that people do not always talk about. CNBC is a great way to learn about money and although finance or business is not my major I still enjoy learning about it because I still need it for my future.

Speech Theories- Blog #3

The Eight Values of Free Expression that are from the First Amendment shows the Marketplace of Ideas, Participation in Self-Government, Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment, Checking Government Power, Promoting Tolerance, Promoting Innovation and Protecting Dissent. While I found the significance of each and every one of these values only three were the ones that resonated with me more which were: Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment and Promoting Innovation

Stable ChangeStable change was the first one that I had interest in because I had a hard time understanding the connections between free speech and reducing violence, but when I looked into it I could understand that allowing people to have a voice instead of fighting is essential. When people can use their voice there can be less violence in every protest or in anything, showing the necessity for a society that encourages free expression.

Individual Self-Fulfillment- Individual Self-Fulfillment equally is important as I believe that everyone should have the right to share what they think or feel without being judged. Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman talks about how self- actualization shows the discoverance of the strength and values supported by freedom of expression. This gives us the right to speak without feeling judged by others.

Promoting Innovation- Promoting Innovation resonates with the appreciation for creativity. This shows images of slam poetry and its where articles use their voices to draw attention for social views on the issues that go on. Slam poetry exemplifies promoting innovation against the critique against the government's actions. I usually most of the time so no9t like poetry but my passion for drawing even though I do not draw well I still love drawing and I believe that with drawing or painting people can show what they feel or think without speaking about it. For example; Banksy's painting “Love is in the Air” shows a message advocating hope in violence.

In conclusion, in a video that I watched talking about Freedom of Speech Creg talked about Freedom of Speech is vital which allows individuals to address injustices that might go unchallenged. While I still value all eight principles the main ones that caught my eye was; Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment and Promoting Innovation that resonates with my personal beliefs and experiences.

Blog Post #2 Supreme Court

After I watched the video about the Supreme Court and how it operates, I learned that they receive 100 cases a week which really intrigued me which is also about 7,000 cases a year but they only accept about 100 cases annually. This surprised me because of how many people are trying to get justice and how many people are trying to voice their reasonings by the highest court. What made the video very interesting for me was the petition that is given to individuals showing the importance of each of the cases no matter what size the case is. It shows how much trust and responsibilities they have. Each of the rulings shapes the social norms. The Supreme Court is a commitment highlighting the deliberation in their decision making.

I was also surprised when I found out that there are over 100 Supreme Court justices in all America serving 16 years which is less than I expected. This shows the role of the Supreme Court justice and the unique role they undertake within the judicial system. This made me appreciate the role even more because the Supreme Court is a notable achievement.

Justices are navigating through interpreting the Constitution. It shows that serving on the Court is honorable and has responsibility to navigate the legal landscapes and the decisions that affect people.  Understanding the significance of what the Supreme Court goes through can set legal precedent and have an impact on American society. This understanding has newfound awareness and profound impact that serve justice equality and the rule of law.

This video showed me the new perspectives of the Supreme Court and what decisions they have to make and what the process is to making those decisions that are guided through the constitution which was written 200 years ago. I saw clearly how much work the justices have to do and the impact they have of ruling the society. I now understand more the Supreme Court and how much they do for the people.
